Job Description: The Dauphin Island Sea Lab invites applications for a faculty position as a Senior Marine Scientist in Avian Ecology. DISL Senior Marine Scientists may also receive a faculty appointment at an Alabama University with rank commensurate with experience. Although we expect to hire at the level of Senior Marine Scientist I (equivalent to assistant professor), established candidates seeking higher ranks will be considered.
We seek candidates conducting novel, cutting-edge research using birds to study aspects of biodiversity resilience in changing coastal environments. Areas of expertise could include (but are not limited to) behavioral ecology, human impacts on migration, habitat suitability and conservation, socio-economic impacts, disease transmission and zoonotics with OneHealth applications, and responses to environmental stresses in the context of climate change. Individual interests could span from local to global scales and across multiple levels of organization (organism, population, community, ecosystem), although plans to develop at least part of the research program on the Alabama coast is desirable. Interdisciplinary research with approaches applying innovative field, laboratory, or numerical model-based methods (or a combination of approaches) is encouraged.
The successful candidate will be expected to:
- develop and maintain an extramurally funded research program
- teach one graduate course during the academic year and one undergraduate course offered during DISL’s summer program
- advise students (primarily at the graduate level), and
- participate in Dauphin Island Sea Lab outreach activities.
Qualifications:
- Ph.D. (or similar terminal degree) in marine science, environmental science, biology, ecology, or a related discipline at the time of appointment.
- Proven research background as evidenced by a peer reviewed publication record and recognition in the field commensurate with experience.
Preferences:
- Research interests that complement those of existing DISL faculty.
- Post-doctoral experience of at least 2 years in their field of research.
- Strong track record developing a well-funded research program.
- Demonstrated excellence in teaching, with strong communication skills.
- Experience with and commitment to quality mentoring and advising of students.
Wage: N/A
