Job Opening: Seabird Research Intern (AK)

The Alaska Sealife Center is looking to hire a seabird research intern. Deadline to apply: ASAP!

Intern will learn about seabird ecology in Alaska. Skills developed and methods learned will include: bird identification, various methods of survey for seabirds (both at sea and on shore), how to sample for environmental variables, database maintenance, data organization and analysis in R, and observational monitoring of bird health and behavior. Under guidance of the research coordinator, the Intern will be trained and expected to perform the following duties:

  • Record weather and observations during monthly vessel-based seabird surveys
  • Assist with weekly shore-based community science projects monitoring seabirds
  • Conduct QAQC on recorded data
  • Assist with data organization and analysis in R
  • Assist other staff in facilitating avian research sampling and data collection, including but not limited to monitoring of body mass and behaviors, foraging trials, respirometry trials, and laboratory assays
  • Assist with organizing and inventorying laboratory and field supplies
  • Assist research coordinator with other projects as needed
  • Maintain regular communication with research coordinator and PI
  • Assist with other duties relating to the Center’s goals and mission statement as required
