Job Opening: Research Aviculturist – Seasonal (AK)
The Alaska SeaLife Center (ASLC) is seeking a research aviculturist to help with the routine care and data collection of the avian collection at the ASLC. Deadline to apply: priority by 6/30/2021.
Summary: This position is responsible for the routine care and data collection of the avian collection at the ASLC, with a large percentage of time spent working with the Research Program birds, under the supervision of the Avian Curator.
Education/Training Requirements: A Bachelor’s degree in marine biology, biology, zoology or related field required. Experience working with research birds, seabirds, or captive breeding programs is highly desired.
Essential Duties:
- Primarily assists with the care of the research birds at ASLC. Assists in the care of the ASLC avian collection. Becomes familiar with avian handling, monitoring, and quarantine protocols.
- Daily diet preparations, routine cleaning of bird habitats and other work areas, including snow removal when necessary.
- Ensures accurate daily record keeping as assigned. Maintains proper records in accordance with the ASLC and protocol requirements.
- Able to multitask while working independently, able to prioritize animal needs and the importance of proper and accurate data collection.
- Follows established routines for bird care, food preparation and clean up, including proper maintenance and sterilization of equipment.
- Mentors and supervises interns and volunteers. Sets performance standards for staff as assigned.
- Participates in basic bird training for research applications.
- Becomes familiar and conducts observational monitoring of bird health and behavior.
- Assists other staff in facilitating avian research sampling and data collection, including but not limited to monitoring of body mass and behaviors, foraging trials, respirometry trials, and saxitoxin exposure trials.
- Supports research being performed on ASLC birds within accepted research and husbandry protocols. Assists with research projects as assigned.
- Maintains communication to Avian Curator and PI of the Common murre research program.
- Fosters good relations with visitors, volunteers, community leaders, contractors, and fellow staff members by promoting positive attitudes, good will, cooperation, and striving towards providing a high standard of service.
- Complies with all Alaska SeaLife Center policies, procedures, and programs.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Other Skills and Abilities: Must possess organizational skills for data collection and captive breeding programs. Be self-motivated and communicate effectively orally and in writing with various levels in the organization. Ability to interface with researchers as required. Experience mentoring and supervising interns and volunteers. Excellent observation skills, ability to multitask and manage time well in an ever changing environment. Basic computer skills and experience with Word and Excel software, and ability to learn use of other software as needed.
