Job Opening: Faculty Research Assistant (OR)

The Oregon State University Department of Fisheries, Wildlife and Conservation invites applications for a full-time (1.0 FTE), 9-month, fixed-term Faculty Research Assistant. Deadline to apply: priority by 7/14/2021.

Position Summary: The Seabird Oceanography Lab at Hatfield Marine Science Center, Oregon State University is looking for a skilled science communicator to develop collaborations for multiple international field efforts in the Asia-Pacific region (and globally) facilitated by the Cormorant Oceanography Project. The applicant will work closely with the Cormorant Oceanography Project PIs and Project Manager, serve as the data coordinator, assist with data QA/QC of biologging data, assist with field efforts, and facilitate data sharing and publishing. The applicant will assist with the logistics, field efforts, and data outputs of other ongoing projects in the Seabird Oceanography Lab that involve, seabird capture and handling, biologging, seabird reproductive monitoring, and at-sea seabird observations. The applicant will contribute to the scholarship findings of research projects through data analysis. College of Agricultural Sciences faculty are committed to enhancing student success by engaging students in quality academic, research, internships, global studies, and other experiential learning opportunities. Positions with primary responsibility for Extension and outreach are likewise committed to learner success through programming appropriate for diverse audience.

Position Duties:

  • 40% Develop collaborations for multiple international field efforts in the Asia-Pacific region (and globally), coordinate and attend project planning meetings, and attending national and international conferences.
  • 30% Data management
  • 15% Contribute to the scholarly findings of the research projects through data manipulation, processing, and analysis
  • 5% Website content development and maintenance.
  • 5% Field work with seabirds
  • 5% Seabird Oceanography Lab duties, attend lab meetings, and mentoring lab members. Participate in Seabird Oceanography Lab outreach and engagement activities.

Minimum/Required Qualifications:

  • BS or BA in any field
  • Professional verbal and written science communication skills
  • Organized (task prioritization, electronic organization and record keeping, time management)
  • Computer programming experience
  • Interest in open science and data sharing
  • Interest in cormorant ecology, oceanography, and biologging
  • Commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity

This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per OSU Standard 576-055-0000 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions.

This position requires driving a university vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the university; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a motor vehicle history check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver’s license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions as per University Policy 05-030.

Preferred (Special) Considerations:

  • Professional verbal and written science communication skills that include building collaborative relationships, communicating over email and Zoom, experience designing and writing website content, and team oriented on-line communication
  • Organized (e.g. experience with project management, task prioritization, electronic organization and record keeping, and time management)
  • Well versed in open science and data sharing (e.g. github, metadata)
  • Experience processing and handling large biologging datasets derived from multiple sensors (e.g. accelerometry, magnetometers, pressure sensors, GPS tracking data, and other oceanographic sensors)
  • Development of biologging QA/QC procedures
  • Computer programming experience with R, Matlab, and/or python
  • Experience with field methods used to monitor, capture, and handle seabirds
  • Small boat handling (current or prior MOCC certification)
  • Experience working at-sea
  • Experience working internationally
  • Interest in cormorant ecology, oceanography, and biologging
  • MS or 3-years of equivalent working experience
  • Record of/commitment to work with underrepresented/underserved students or other audiences
  • Life experience, education, or training that broadens capacity to equalize student success or impact underserved audiences.
