Creature Feature: Blue-footed Booby
Pacific Seabird Group presents the September Creature Feature! This month, we’re highlighting the Blue-footed Booby, or Sula nebouxii. The Blue-footed Booby is recognized for its distinctive blue webbed feet, with the coloration coming from carotenoids obtained through its diet of fish. Those brilliant blue feet are more than just a striking feature- they also play an important role in courtship, with mates showing a preference for brighter blue feet. During courtship, males present females with small objects such as stones before performing an elaborate high stepping display. Blue-footed Boobies are also expert plunge divers, spotting prey from the air before diving from heights of up to 80 feet and reaching depths of around 65 feet below the surface.
🌊 Habitat
Blue-footed Boobies are found throughout the eastern Pacific, from Baja California south to Peru, including the Galápagos Islands. They spend most of their lives at sea, usually in coastal waters rather than the open ocean, and come ashore to rest and nest. Their nesting sites are typically arid, rocky islands, where pairs make their nests directly on the ground.

Conservation Status: Least Concern (IUCN Red List)
Blue-footed Boobies depend mostly on fish and squid for their diet. Changes in ocean conditions, including warming and acidification, can affect the abundance of these food items. Climatic events such as El Niño can also cause fluctuations in prey availability and have contributed to local population declines in some areas.
✨ Fun Fact
Blue-footed Boobies have permanently closed nostrils, an adaptation for their diving lifestyle. They also have a specialized air sac in the skull that helps protect them from the impact of striking the ocean and the pressure experienced during deep dives.
