Job Opening: Research Biologist (AK)
ABR, Inc. is searching for a research biologist for May to September 2022. Deadline to apply: 2/17/2022.
Job responsibilities:
- Conduct field surveys for shorebirds, waterfowl, passerines, raptors, and other wildlife
- Assist with scheduling, logistics support, and coordinate travel for field surveys
- Coordinate a team of research biologists and technicians engaged in fieldwork, data management, analysis, and reporting
- Supervise data entry and proofing, primarily on mobile electronic devices
- Organize and review data; assist with analysis and reporting
- Participate in safety training and follow ABR’s Safety Policy, including COVID-19 related field and office procedures
Qualifications:
- Experience conducting field surveys of nesting birds and expertise in bird identification is required; experience with shorebird surveys and identifying breeding shorebirds preferred.
- Enthusiasm for flying in helicopters and small fixed-wing aircraft; experience with aerial surveys for birds and/or mammals preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to spot and identify cryptic wildlife.
- Ability to conduct field work involving wading, hiking, and physical labor in remote settings with bears and biting insects. Must be able to carry up to 22 kg (50 lbs) and work 10–12 hours per day during field deployments.
- Experience in data management is required, preferably using GIS, PostgreSQL, and R.
- Strong organization skills and ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- B.S. in wildlife biology, ecology, zoology, or related fields required with a minimum of 3 years’ experience or equivalent. M.S. preferred.
- Proof of COVID-19 vaccination is required.
- Proof of eligibility to work in the United States is required if selected for hire.
Hours: 40 hours/week on average; field work will involve longer hours and as many as 30 consecutive days of work.
Compensation: $24–30/h depending on experience; overtime eligible. Room and board provided only while in the field.
