Job Opening: Field Biology Technician (AK)

ABR, Inc. is searching for a wildlife, vegetation, and wetland (seasonal) field technicians for 2 to 5 months. Deadline to apply: 2/17/2022.

Job responsibilities may include:

  • Conducting surveys for birds, caribou, and other wildlife under supervision of Research Biologists and Senior Scientists.

  • Assisting in collecting vegetation and soils data for long-term monitoring studies, mapping projects, wetland delineations, and possibly land rehabilitation studies.

  • Assisting in mobilization and demobilization of field gear at the office.

  • Participating in safety training and following ABR’s Safety Policy, including COVID-19 related field and office procedures.

  • Accurately entering and proofing data primarily on mobile electronic devices.

Qualifications:

  • Experience with identification of birds by sight and sound, and one or more of the following skills: vegetation sampling, soil characterization, field wetland determinations, aerial photointerpretation

  • Resistance to motion sickness; experience with aerial surveys for birds and/or mammals is a plus

  • Meticulous collection and recording of data

  • Ability to conduct field work involving wading, hiking and physical labor in remote settings. Must be able to carry up to 22 kg (50 lbs) and work 10–12 hours per day during field deployments in bear country

  • Ability to live and work cooperatively with others, to work independently when needed, and to maintain a positive attitude under a heavy workload

  • B.S. in the life sciences (wildlife biology, ecology, zoology, or related fields) and/or have previous experience as a field biology technician

  • Proof of COVID-19 vaccination required

  • Proof of eligibility to work in the United States is required if selected for hire

Work period: May–August 2022. Field deployments may require up to 28 consecutive days of work.

Wage:  $19–23/h, depending on experience; overtime eligible. Room and board provided only while in the field.
