Job Description: This position offers the opportunity to build the capacity of a small environmental non-profit by providing financial services. Responsibilities include financial analysis and budget preparation, accounting operations and reporting, and grants management. Establishes or improves upon the organization’s financial policies, procedures, and systems. The Finance Manager is responsible for ensuring legal and regulatory compliance of the financial functions, provides guidance to the Executive Council, and interfaces directly with banks, sponsors, and grant recipients. Duties and responsibilities:

  • Maintain accounting records
  • Complete month-end closing and bank reconciliations
  • Complete monthly and annual financial statements
  • Provide financial analyses, reports and forecasts to management
  • Advise management in financial decision-making and systems development and improvement
  • Manage the creation, improvement and implementation of financial policies and procedures in line with nonprofit requirements
  • Improve and monitor adequate internal controls
  • Monitor security of organization’s financial assets
  • Manage grant documentation and disbursements
  • Work with the Treasurer to prepare the annual budget
  • Work with the Treasurer to support the Pacific Seabird Group’s Annual Meetings including developing budgets, making payments to vendors, and managing meeting-related income
  • Work with the Treasurer to compile information for tax returns
  • Create and manage sponsor invoices and payments
  • Work with Executive Council to achieve grant procurement and financial management goals
  • Other duties as assigned by the Executive Council

About Pacific Seabird Group: The Pacific Seabird Group (PSG) is a society of professional seabird researchers and managers dedicated to the study and conservation of seabirds. PSG was formed in 1972 out of a need for increased communication among academic and government seabird researchers. The principal goals of PSG are (1) to increase the quality and quantity of seabird research through facilitating exchange of information and (2) to identify and assess the importance of threats to seabird populations and provide government agencies and others with expert advice on managing the threats and populations.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting or related field and a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience; CPA certification preferred
  • Demonstrated progression in financial leadership with at least two years of experience managing the finances of a nonprofit organization
  • Strong understanding of day-to-day accounting processes, general ledger, banking, budget processes, and nonprofit taxes and registrations
  • Proficient in the use of Quickbooks and Microsoft Office applications
  • Thorough understanding of nonprofit accounting and Generally Accepted Accounting Standards
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) preferred (GAAP)
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Wage: This remote part-time 1099 contract position is expected to require on average 5 hours/week. The salary is commensurate with education and experience, $30 – $35/hour. The candidate would work alongside a volunteer Treasurer from the Pacific Seabird Group, under the supervision of the Executive Council.
