Paid Trainee/Intern: Pathways Student Intern (CA)

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is hiring an intern to work in the Ventura Fish and Wildlife Office on two projects: 1) assist the VFWO Natural Resource Damage Assessment and Restoration (NRDAR) Program to implement seabird restoration projects that compensate for environmental injuries caused by the Refugio Beach Oil Spill (RBOS) and 2) create a more efficient process to complete informal consultations for beneficial projects. Job Description: The selected intern will be placed at the Ventura Fish and Wildlife Office. Ventura Fish and Wildlife Office is a large USFWS office within the Ecological Services program. The Pathways Student Trainee will complete two major projects. The first project will be to assist the VFWO Natural Resource Damage Assessment and Restoration (NRDAR) Program to implement seabird restoration projects that compensate for environmental injuries caused by the Refugio Beach Oil Spill (RBOS) and help the natural resource trustees select restoration projects that benefit seabirds along the California coast. The project’s goal is to develop selection criteria for restoration projects based on RBOS documents and relevant literature.

The second project’s goals are to create a more efficient process to complete informal consultations for beneficial projects and develop a streamlined approach to informal consultation with the Army Corps of Engineers, Coast Guard, and National Marine Fisheries Service.

Students who successfully complete program requirements may be eligible for non-competitive conversion to a term or permanent position in the civil service.

Qualifications:

  • Have completed 2 years of post-high school education
  • Located near duty station
  • Are able to complete at least 640 hours of work before graduation
