Paid Scientist: Marine Species Lead Biologist (WA)

The Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife is hiring a marine species lead biologist. The person in this position will work independently and collaboratively drives the development, communication, and implementation of comprehensive biological assessments and conservation plans for native nongame wildlife in Washington. Job Description: This marine species lead biologist independently and collaboratively drives the development, communication, and implementation of comprehensive biological assessments and conservation plans for native nongame wildlife in Washington. With a focus on marine ecology, including listed species such as killer whale, tufted puffin, and marbled murrelet, this role offers a unique opportunity to lead technical working groups, engage with stakeholders, and contribute to impactful projects that align with our commitment to wildlife diversity and conservation.

Qualifications:

Required qualifications:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in wildlife management, wildlife biology, marine biology, wildlife ecology or related field

AND

  • Five (5) years of professional experience in wildlife management or wildlife research.

Please Note:

  • Closely related qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-by-year basis.
  • Master’s degree in the applicable science will substitute for one (1) year of the required experience.
  • A Ph.D. in the applicable science will substitute for two (2) years of the required experience.

Certifications/Licenses:

  • Valid Driver’s License

Preferred qualifications:

In addition to those required qualifications, our ideal applicant will also have some or all of the following:

Knowledge of:

  • Ecology and biology of marine species of Washington.
  • Population biology, marine ecology, conservation biology.
  • Wildlife survey, monitoring, and research techniques.
  • Data management and statistical analysis.
  • Resource management agencies, including the missions, approaches and means of cooperating and collaborating.
  • Conservation planning, endangered species recovery and management, and game species management.

Ability to:

  • Effectively communicate with agency representatives, colleagues, and the public to gain assistance and cooperation with Department conservation planning and species recovery programs.
  • Write, edit and publish professional documents and reports.
  • Facilitate meetings and workshops with internal and external partners to plan, coordinate and implement conservation actions.
  • Conduct effective oral presentations at scientific conferences, agency meetings and public meetings.
  • Lead and coordinate efforts of scientific expert teams in research and planning projects.

Wage: $5,341.00 to $7,184.00 per month
