Job Description: Real Time Research, Inc. (RTR) is located in Bend, Oregon and specializes in biological field studies, data collection, data analysis, and technical writing. Founded in 1999, RTR employees have been conducting fish and wildlife research, monitoring, and evaluation studies in the Pacific Northwest for more than 20 years.
RTR is seeking a self-motivated professional that is interested in being part of a research team at the forefront of studies aimed at monitoring colonial waterbirds (American white pelicans, Brandt’s cormorants, Caspian terns, double-crested cormorants, California gulls, and ring-billed gulls) and restoring fish of conservation concern. Research sites are based throughout the Columbia River Basin in Oregon and Washington. The incumbent will work on a predator-prey study involving endangered salmonids and piscivorous colonial waterbirds (more info here). Work will include capture-recapture-recovery studies involving passive and active tag technologies, aerial and other photogrammetric techniques, wildlife surveys, data compilation, and technical writing. Work will occur both in the field and office. This individual will be responsible the day-to-day collection of data while in the field. Candidates with experience in boating, supervising technicians, data-oriented software (Excel, Access, R, SQL, ArcGIS) and good written and oral communication skills are encouraged to apply.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Fish or Wildlife Biology.
- Minimum of two years’ experience collecting data using modern fish and wildlife tagging/tracking/monitoring techniques (e.g., passive integrated transponder tags, telemetry, UAS, etc.).
- Experience working with a field crew and as a field supervisor (preferred).
- Trailering and boating experience in large water bodies and must have a valid boating license (required).
- Able to work outdoors in remote locations and all conditions (wind, rain, smoke, cold, and heat) for extended periods of time.
- Willingness to travel and relocate to a job site for several months each field season (housing/lodging provided).
- Proficient with data collection, processing and analysis software, and experience working with large, complex datasets.
- Experience writing scientific technical reports and other documents.
- Must be able to pass criminal background check and have a valid driver’s license with a good driving history (required).
Wage: $4,300 – $4,700 per month (depending on qualifications and experience). Travel/living expenses provided while working in the field, including housing for approximately six months during both 2024 and 2025. PTO, health insurance, bonuses, and retirement benefits provided after the first 3 months of employment. Opportunities for advancement and permanent placement within the company exist.
