Paid Field/Research Assistant: Faculty Research Assistant / Research Associate (OR)

Job Description: A substantial portion of this position will focus on integrating biologging datasets from tagged seabirds into oceanographic and ecological workflows.

The purpose of this position is to work with a team of scientists to support basic research in oceanography. The tasks are primarily centered on developing computational workflows and will include developing scripts and software for acquiring, real-time processing, and visualizing oceanographic data; processing and analyzing large oceanographic datasets; archiving and disseminating data and code; assisting with developing hydrodynamic numerical simulations; processing and analyzing simulation output; and assisting with training of new group members. All work will follow open science best practices (e.g., version control, FAIR data). The computer code and techniques used in processing and analysis need to be clearly documented to facilitate future analyses and archiving of data. The FRA/RA will also produce figures and animations for technical documents such as reports, manuscripts, proposals, and presentations, and participate in and/or support field work.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications for the rank of Faculty Research Assistant:

  • Bachelor of Science (BS) or Bachelor of Arts (BA) in a technical field such as computer science, physical oceanography, physics, engineering, mathematics/statistics, or related field.
  • Demonstrated programming and statistical analysis skills and experience using a high-level programming language such as Python, Matlab, R and/or Fortran, and data formats used for archiving such as NetCDF.
  • Demonstrated experience in development of computational workflows for acquiring, visualizing, analyzing, and/or serving environmental data.
  • Demonstrated organizational skills; and good oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team and maintain effective working relationships with scientists, technicians, and students.
  • A demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity.

To be considered for a position at the rank of Research Associate, candidates must meet the minimum qualifications for the Faculty Research Assistant rank listed above, as well as the additional minimum qualifications below:

  • Ph.D. in computer science, physical oceanography, physics, engineering, or mathematics/statistics or related field.
  • Successful publication of research work in peer-review journals.

Wage: $60,000-$75,000 annual salary (.60 – 1.00 FTE)
