Job Description: The SDZWA Conservation Science team is seeking a highly qualified and motivated candidate to form part of a team focused on research and monitoring of California least terns and Western snowy plovers. Successful candidates must have a bachelor’s degree in wildlife biology, ecology, marine science or a related field as well as more than three years of experience with seabird and shorebird conservation research, monitoring (nest checks and banding), and leading field crews.

Being a field intensive position, candidate should be able to cover 5-7 miles of beach habitat per day during nesting season, as well as have proficiency in capturing/banding avian wildlife and identifying local bird species and potential avian and mammalian predators (including evidence of predators). Candidate must also have broad experience documenting, summarizing and presenting monitoring and research data in reports and publications, have excellent scientific writing skills, effective oral communication, and the ability to work independently and as part of a team. In addition, candidate must be well skilled in analyzing data using Matlab and R (RSutdio) statistical computing and graphical software as well as ESRI and open-source Geographic Information System software, and SQL databases. Finally, forming part of a diverse team of people working in varied conditions—including military bases—candidate should have strong emotional intelligence and soft skills.

Salaried, Full-Time Exempt Grant Position; Salary Range: $62,400 to $65,140

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Experience monitoring seabird and shorebird colonies
  • Experience capturing and banding seabirds/shorebirds.
  • Experience managing and analyzing data using Matlab and/or R and GIS software.

Preferred:

  • Experience managing SQL databases or relational databases
  • Experience with scientific writing and hypothesis testing
  • Experience supporting compliance and regulation requirements
  • Experience administrating grants
