Education/Experience Requirements: Master’s degree in biology, marine biology, laboratory sciences, or related field, or Bachelor’s degree in biology, marine biology, laboratory sciences, or related field and two years of work experience in a similar position required. Experience with laboratory instrument and supply procurement, inventory and maintenance required. Experience with laboratory data management required. Experience conducting laboratory analyses required, and experience with biochemical and molecular laboratory analyses preferred. Experience coordinating laboratory research projects preferred.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Functions as primary manager for research laboratories at the Alaska SeaLife Center, including procurement, inventory, and maintenance of research laboratory instruments and supplies.
- Functions as primary coordinator for laboratory research projects conducted at the Science Department of the Alaska SeaLife Center.
- Conducts and coordinates laboratory research as assigned.
- Develops new laboratory techniques and capacities. As part of a marine health research team, develops and applies laboratory methods to assess and monitor marine animal health in changing oceans.
- Ensures that appropriate record keeping is maintained, including standard operating protocols, sample tracking records and database management for laboratory research projects. Maintains proper records in accordance with the Alaska SeaLife Center protocol requirements.
- Ensures accurate daily record keeping and archival for laboratory research data.
- Provides oversight for research laboratory safety and maintains protocols and inventories for safe laboratory operations.
- Oversees and coordinates research sample inventories and archives.
- Assists other staff in facilitating laboratory research sampling and data collection.
- Maintains laboratory budgets as assigned.
- Assists with and prepares reports, presentations, and publications.
- Works with other departments to communicate research to ASLC audiences and to engage non-scientists with marine health research.
- Fosters good relations with visitors, volunteers, community leaders, contractors, and fellow staff members by promoting positive attitudes, good will, cooperation, and providing high standards of service.
- Complies with all Alaska SeaLife Center policies, procedures, and programs.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
