Job Opening: Seasonal Biologist (Fl)

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission seeks an applicant who will perform seabird and shorebird surveys at the Little Estero Island Critical Wildlife Area, Fort Myers Beach, Florida. Deadline to apply: 3/21/2021.

Applicant must be able to independently survey and collect data for large populations of nesting sea- and shorebirds following protocols outline on the Florida Shorebird Database (www.FLShorebirdDatabase.org). The individual must be familiar with the Florida Shorebird Alliance (http://flshorebirdalliance.org/home.aspx) posting guidelines and have experience posting and maintaining protected sea- and shorebird nesting areas.

The individual must be able to use a GPS to document posted nesting locations to inform management decisions. Applicant must have knowledge of predator tracking and be capable of determining sources of nest failure. Other duties include creating weekly reports on nesting and management activities, providing technical assistance to ensure beach management actives (e.g. beach raking) do not impact beach nesting birds.

The biologist will (1) coordinate and maintain a cooperative working relationship with private landowners, keeping them apprised of management activities and addressing any concerns, (2) continue supporting existing partnerships; including the town of Ft. Myers Beach and Audubon Florida, to design and implement strategies for building a supportive constituency for the Critical Wildlife Area, particularly among adjacent landowners and residents (3) perform stewardship by engaging beach-goers to garner interest and support for the Critical Wildlife Area by visiting the area 5 days/week for at least 2 hours/day. Duties will be focused on the Little Estero Island Critical Wildlife Area and adjacent beach nesting areas along Fort Myers Beach.

This is a seasonal, field-based position beginning as soon as possible no later than May 1, 2021 and will last throughout the nesting season (approximately mid-to-late August). Work hours will range from 30-40 hours a week, depending on workload, with total hours for the season not to exceed 960.
