Job Opening: Research Biologist – Wildlife (AK)

Environmental Research and Services, an equal opportunity employer, seeks qualified applicants for a wildlife research biologist position based in their Fairbanks, Alaska, office.

JOB SUMMARY: ABR has an immediate opening for an Avian Ecologist to conduct and support bird studies throughout Alaska. The ideal candidate for this position will have a broad background in wildlife biology, including shorebird studies, and experience with database management, statistical analyses, and preparation of technical reports.

STATUS: Seasonal position (appointment may range 6–9 months)

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Conduct field surveys for shorebirds, waterfowl, passerines, and raptors
  • Lead scheduling, logistic support, and coordinate travel for field surveys
  • Organize data and assist with analysis, reporting, publications, and presentations
  • Participate in safety training and follow ABR’s Safety Policy, including COVID-19 related field and office procedures

QUALIFICATIONS: Experience conducting field surveys of nesting birds and expertise in bird identification is required; experience with shorebird surveys and identifying breeding shorebirds preferred. Applicant must be able to conduct field work involving wading and physical labor in remote settings. Travel in helicopters, small fixed-wing aircraft, on snow machines, and in boats will be required. Experience in data management is required, preferably using GIS, PostgreSQL, and R. Applicant must have strong organization skills; and be able to work independently and as part of a team. B.S. in wildlife biology, ecology, zoology, or related fields required with a minimum of 3 years’ experience. M.S. preferred.

HOURS: Approximately 30 hours/week on average; field work will involve longer hours and as many as 30 days of consecutive work, mostly during the summer months.

WAGE: Depending on experience; overtime eligible. Room and board provided only while in the field.
