Job Opening: Field Technician – Aquatic Ecology/Fisheries (AK)
Environmental Research and Services, an equal opportunity employer, seeks qualified applicants for aquatic ecology/fisheries field technician positions based out of their Fairbanks or Anchorage, Alaska, offices.
JOB SUMMARY: ABR is seeking Aquatic Ecology technicians to assist with fishery, aquatic ecology, and water quality projects in streams, lakes, and marine waters throughout Alaska.
STATUS: Seasonal positions (appointments may range 3–7 months)
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
- Conduct field surveys for fish, aquatic invertebrates, and aquatic habitats in freshwater and marine environments under supervision of Research Biologists and Senior Scientists
- Assist in mobilization and demobilization of field gear at the office
- Participate in safety training and follow ABR’s Safety Policy, including COVID-19 related field and office procedures
- Data entry and proofing, primarily on mobile electronic devices
- Process biological samples in the laboratory including analysis of fish otoliths, stomach contents, and fish/invertebrate identification
QUALIFICATIONS: Familiarity with aquatic macroinvertebrate collections/identification, water quality studies, or experience with stream habitat and/or hydrology surveys. Experience working in remote communities is helpful. An interest in assisting with other disciplines (vegetation, wetlands, wildlife surveys) is a plus. Candidates must be able to conduct field work involving wading and physical labor in remote settings. Traveling in helicopters, small fixed-wing aircraft, on snowmobiles, and in boats will be required. Must be able to carry up to 22 kg (50 lbs) and work 10–12 hours per day during field deployments. Candidates should be self-motivated, able to work independently, meticulous in collecting and recording data, able to live and work cooperatively with others, and able to maintain a positive attitude under a heavy workload. B.S. degree in a discipline related to fisheries or aquatic ecology is required and previous experience in fisheries research is preferred.
WORK PERIOD: Work begins in mid-May and may extend as late as December 2021; field deployments may require up to 21 days of consecutive work, mostly during the summer and fall.
WAGE: Depending on experience; overtime pay is possible for these positions. Room and board provided only while in the field; candidates must be based in Anchorage during the period of employment.
