Postdoc Position: Seabird bycatch in Northeastern US and Atlantic Canada (VA)

Virginia Tech is searching for a postdoc to join a funded research project aimed at improving the understanding of seabird bycatch, particularly Great Shearwater (Ardenna gravis) and Northern Gannets (Morus bassanus), in commercial fisheries in the Northeastern U.S. and Atlantic Canada. Job Description: The position will begin in October 2024. The successful candidate will join a funded research project aimed at improving the understanding of seabird bycatch, particularly Great Shearwater (Ardenna gravis) and Northern Gannets (Morus bassanus), in commercial fisheries in the Northeastern U.S. and Atlantic Canada. The candidate will collaborate with partners to identify and promote the voluntary adoption of effective bycatch reduction strategies in targeted fisheries. There will also be opportunities to contribute to writing research proposals and mentoring graduate students.

Qualifications:

Requirements:

  • Ph.D. in fisheries, biology/ecology, statistics, or related fields
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently and collaboratively
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Proficiency in R, Python, or MATLAB
  • Familiarity with spatiotemporal analytical approaches and software

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience in ecological modeling, population dynamics, or fisheries management
  • Familiarity with species distribution models, catch rate standardization, stock assessment models, and statistical modeling in both frequentist and Bayesian frameworks
  • A solid track record of publications
