Job Description: BirdCare Aotearoa is a registered charitable trust dedicated to providing professional care and rehabilitation for sick, injured and orphaned wild birds in the greater Auckland area. Based at a large site in Green Bay, BirdCare operates a Department of Conservation approved avian hospital and rehabilitation facilities, handling over 6,000 birds per annum. The centre is run by a small team of experienced professional staff assisted by a larger team of volunteers.

To apply for this vacancy, you MUST be a New Zealand citizen, resident, or have already secured the right to work in New Zealand and therefore hold a valid visa. All applications must include a CV and covering letter. Applications to be sent to jsomerf@gmail.com by 3/3/2023.

Qualifications: The General Manager position is a strategic management role responsible for consolidating the existing operations and laying the foundations for future growth and development. We are looking for a leader who is passionate about protecting New Zealand birds and who is highly experienced at building strategic partnerships and fundraising relationships. Our ideal candidate has:

  • Proven leadership experience: able to think strategically to achieve organisational goals and deliver on an agreed strategy
  • A track record of success in building and maintaining successful stakeholder relationships including with government agencies, donors, employees, volunteers and the Board
  • Proven experience at identifying and bringing in new sources of funding and in maximising strategic funding opportunities
  • Demonstrated financial acumen including experience of managing operations within budget constraints and an eye for detail
  • Strong commercial acumen and negotiating skills including the ability to negotiate and manage contracts in the interests of the organisation
  • A collaborative team-player with strong people-management skills, experienced in creating resilient teams and a consultative ‘no-surprises’ approach to communicating with the BirdCare team and the Board
  • Highly developed oral and written communication skills
  • A leader who is not afraid to roll up their sleeves and do what needs to be done

Whilst a background in bird or animal research, care, rehabilitation or veterinary services would be an advantage it is not a pre-requisite for the role.

This is a unique opportunity to join an organisation that is widely recognised for its positive impact on wildlife and the local community but that has plenty of scope for further growth and development.
