Job Opening: Field Technician – Wildlife (AK)

Environmental Research and Services, an equal opportunity employer, seeks qualified applicants for wildlife field technician positions based out of their Fairbanks or Anchorage, Alaska, offices.

JOB SUMMARY: ABR is seeking several technicians to support field studies at project locations throughout Alaska.

STATUS: Seasonal positions (appointments may range 2–5 months)

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conduct surveys for various species which may include waterfowl, shorebirds, raptors, and caribou under supervision of Research Biologists and Senior Scientists
  • Assist in mobilization and demobilization of field gear at the office
  • Participate in safety training and follow ABR’s Safety Policy, including COVID-19 related field and office procedures
  • Data entry and proofing, primarily on mobile electronic devices
  • Review video and still camera footage of nesting waterbirds

QUALIFICATIONS: Familiarity with a variety of wildlife sampling techniques, with a preference for good identification skills for birds (waterfowl, shorebirds, passerines, raptors). Resistance to motion sickness is required; experience with aerial surveys for birds and/or mammals is a plus. The applicant must be able to conduct field work involving biting insects, wading, hiking miles over uneven terrain, and other significant physical labor in remote settings; must be able to carry up to 22 kg (50 lbs) and work 10–12 hours per day during deployment. Traveling in 4-wheel-drive vehicles, helicopters, small fixed-wing aircraft, and in boats may be required. Candidates should be self-motivated, able to work independently, meticulous in collecting and recording data, able to live and work cooperatively with others, and able to maintain a positive attitude under a heavy workload. The selected applicant must successfully complete bear safety and shotgun training. A minimum of 2 years of undergraduate experience is requested; a B.S. in the life sciences (wildlife biology, ecology, zoology, or related fields) is preferred.

WORK PERIOD: May–August 2021, with possibility for longer term through November 2021 (as dictated by available workload). Field deployments may require up to 28 days of consecutive work.

WAGE: Depending on experience; overtime eligible. Room and board provided only while in the field.
