Hawai‘i Wildlife Center (HWC): Hawaiian archipelago seabird and shorebird rehabilitation patients treated at HWC March 1, 2023 to February 29, 2024 consisted of 988 seabirds (19 species) and 15 shorebirds (2 species). 

  • Seabird species are listed in order of largest number cared for to lowest:
    • Wedge-tailed Shearwater (Ardenna pacifica; ʻUaʻu kani) – 798
      • The majority of these shearwaters were downed fledglings due to light pollution or impact with structures
    • White Tern (Gygis alba; Manu o Kū) – 92
      • Most of the terns were orphaned chicks that were raised and soft-released
    • Bulwer’s Petrel (Bulweria bulwerii; ʻOu) – 17
      • Majority were downed fledglings with short stays in care
    • Hawaiian Petrel (Pterodroma sandwichensis; ʻUaʻu) – 17
    • Brown Booby (Sula leucogaster plotus; ʻĀ) – 11 
    • Leachʻs Storm-Petrel (Oceanodroma leucorhoa leucorhoa) – 10
    • Sooty Tern (Sterna fuscata; ʻEwa ʻewa) – 6
    • Red-footed Booby (Sula sula; ʻĀ) – 6
    • Sooty Shearwater (Ardenna grisea) – 6
    • White-tailed Tropicbird (Phaethon lepturus; Koaʻe kea) – 5
    • Brown Noddy (Anous stolidus; Noio kōhā) – 4
    • Laysan Albatross (Phoebastria immutabilis; Mōlī) – 4
    • Masked Booby (Sula dactylatra; ʻĀ) – 2
    • Great Frigatebird (Frigata minor palerstoni; ʻIwa) – 2
    • Red-tailed Tropicbird (Phaeithon rubricauda; Koaʻe ʻula) – 2
    • Nazca Booby (Sula granti; ʻĀ) – 2
    • Christmas Shearwater (Puffinus nativitatus; ʻAoʻū) – 2
    • Bullerʻs Shearwater (Puffinus bulleri) – 1
    • Glaucous-winged Gull (Larus glaucescens; ʻOpaʻipaʻi) – 1
  • Shorebirds:
    • Pacific Golden Plover (Pluvialis fulva; Kōlea) – 14
    • Ruddy Turnstone (Arenaria interpres; ʻAkekeke) – 1
